Self Help Treatments
General wellbeing greater demands are placed on a woman's body during
pregnancy and while breast-feeding. Obtaining sufficient nutrition
especially protein is important. Exercise and rest are also important.
Below are some alternative drug free methods of treating some of the
common discomforts and problems of pregnancy:
Cramping in the legs Mag. phos. tissue salts may be
beneficial. See more about tissue salts below.
Late onset or slowing down of labour nipple stimulation.
Stimulating the nipples releases endorphins and oxytocin, the hormones
required for bringing on and strengthening contractions.
Fluid retention exercise and salting food to taste will help
keep fluid in the blood vessels and decrease swelling. Nat. mur. tissue
salts can also help.
Frequent urination is caused by pressure from the uterus on
the bladder , urethra and pelvic floor muscles. It is aggravated if the
pelvic floor muscles are weak and by wearing tight clothes. The urge to
urinate is best not suppressed. In late pregnancy to help empty the
bladder more fully, rocking back and forwards while urinating can help.
Heartburn is worse in late pregnancy and is usually caused by
the uterus pressing against the stomach so that the stomach's contents
ref lux into the lower oesophagus. Eat smaller meals more frequently.
Avoid eating heavier foods before going to bed. Avoid spicy and fried
foods and stimulants such as tea and coffee. Unless you suffer from
swollen ankles raising your head may help. Eating almonds or taking Nat.
phos. tissue salts may also help.
Morning sickness (nausea with or without vomiting) is due to
changes in hormone levels during pregnancy. It usually abates by weeks
12 - 16. Eat smaller meals more frequently and avoid fatty foods. A dry
biscuit is sometimes enough to ease the nausea. Ginger tea or cooking
with fresh ginger may help.
Thrush is a fungal infection characterised by an itchy, white
vaginal discharge . Causes can include stress, hormonal imbalance,
pregnancy and drugs such as antibiotics. Eating live yoghurt and
supplementing with acidophilus can help. Sweet foods and foods
containing yeast (alcohol, breads, mushrooms) are best avoided. It is
recommended to see a practitioner if you have thrush.
About Tissue Salts
Tissue Salts, also called cell salts or biochemic salts, are composed
of minerals that occur naturally in our bodies and all organic matter on
earth, such as plants, rocks and soil. Dr Scheussler, a prominent 19th
Century German doctor, conducted research which demonstrated that, when
reduced to ashes, each human cell contains 12 minerals or biochemic
tissue salts and that these minerals should be present in all living
cells in perfect balance to ensure good health.
Imbalance or a deficiency of any of the tissue salts, causes disease
and the body begins to develop symptoms associated with the tissue salts
that are lacking. Restoring the correct balance of tissue salts in the
body will therefore remove the symptoms and restore health and vitality.
This system of medicine is called Biochemistry and is still practiced
today by homoeopaths and naturopaths all over the world.
The Twelve Tissue Salts of Dr Schuessler work gently on the physical
structure of the body, building, repairing and maintaining health over a
period of time. They are prepared in very low homoeopathic potency and
pass rapidly into the body through the bloodstream.
Tissue Salts are available from selected pharmacies and come in a
tablet or oral spray form with instructions for use on the label.
